Quick Guide to Petra, Jordan

Four tips for visiting Petra

#1 A guide is your Best Friend

Hire a guide, or at very least follow one. If it wasn’t for the guide that was leading another guest we would’ve been lost. It is hard to tell where the trail begins when you are hiking Petra from the top of it to the front. Be prepared for some narrow walk ways.

#2 Prep for the duration!

The hike from the back to the front is about 6 hours, there are other options though to experience different parts of the site. I recommend speaking to the visitors center to get advice on what trail best fits your time and what you’re hoping to see. There are shops along the way to buy water and snacks, take breaks and shop.

#3 Get the Jordan Pass!

You can get access to the site by purchasing your Jordan Pass online beforehand. No need to wait to purchase at the site. There’s a couple options when purchasing your Jordan Pass and each type has different perks. The first and cheapest option is good for one visit and the second is good for two visits. #4 Pack a day bag!

Pack a little day pack, with water, sunscreen, & wipes, it was sooo HOT ! I visited in July so it was peak heat in the summer. Something I wish I would’ve known before drinking so much water is that there aren’t many bathrooms. There was one restaurant more than halfway through the hike that had a bathroom, so plan accordingly. There could be more but that’s the only one I came across, You can get more water along the way because there are at least 4-5 food spots on the path.

Rookie Mistake: Don’t forget to put sunscreen on your neck, especially on the back!
